For a first visit to Dublin, base yourself in Dublin 2 — the area bounded by Grafton Street, St Stephen’s Green and Trinity College — where you can walk to Temple Bar, the Book of Kells and the National Museum without touching a bus. Dublin 1, north of the Liffey around O’Connell Street and Parnell Square, runs roughly 15-25% cheaper for the same star rating and puts you closer to the Rotunda and the 3Arena via the Luas red line. Ballsbridge and Donnybrook, a 20-minute walk south-east through Merrion Square, suit those who want quieter Georgian streets and the RDS; Smithfield and Stoneybatter are the cheaper end for anyone happy on the Luas.
Rates climb hardest from mid-May to early September and again over St Patrick’s weekend around 17 March, when the parade closes the city centre and rooms in Dublin 2 can double. Six Nations Saturdays at the Aviva Stadium in Lansdowne Road, big gigs at Croke Park, and the Web Summit years all move prices the same way, so check the fixture list before you book. November, January and early February are the honest bargains, though the weather is what you would expect — bring a coat regardless of month.
Budget beds in hostels and no-frills chains around Gardiner Street and Smithfield sit around ₹6,500-9,500 a night; mid-range three- and four-stars in Dublin 2 and Dublin 4 typically run ₹14,000-22,000, and the well-known five-stars on St Stephen’s Green and Merrion Square push ₹40,000 and up in season. The centre is genuinely walkable end to end in about 30 minutes, and the Luas plus Dublin Bus cover everything else — a Leap Card is worth it from day one. The Aircoach and route 41 from Dublin Airport reach the city in 30-45 minutes for under ₹1,200; a taxi is closer to ₹3,500-4,500.
